What Does Laying Points Mean In Sports Betting?

In sports betting, laying points means betting on the favorite to win a game. The amount of points a bookmaker gives or takes away is called the “point spread.” If the favorite is favored by six points, then they are “laying” six points. If the underdog is favored by two points, then they are “taking” two points.

When betting on the favorite, the gambler has to risk more money than they stand to gain. This is because the points the favorite is laying must be overcome in order for the bet to win. For example, if the favorite is laying six points, they must win the game by more than six points for the gambler to win the bet. If the favorite wins by exactly six, it is a “push” and the gambler gets their money back.
